Public Affairs

The Office of Public Affairs enhances the image of Appalachian State University by highlighting the best of what the university has to offer. Staff members target their messages for internal and external audiences. Depending on the project, these audiences may include local, regional and national news media; alumni and friends; faculty and staff; or prospective students.

The Office of Public Affairs’ primary tools for sharing news and information are:

  • The university’s Web presence, particularly its home page and top-tier pages
  • The university magazine, Appalachian Today
  • Appalachian Scene internal e-newsletter
  • APPdate e-newsletter for alumni and friends
  • The university cable television program, Appalachian Perspective
  • News releases about student, faculty or university accomplishments
  • Contact with reporters
  • Faculty Experts Guide for reporters
  • Graduation, dean’s list and chancellor’s list information for students’ hometown newspapers
  • Publications and audio/visual projects for the Office of Admissions

The Office of Public Affairs works closely with key areas of campus to determine the most important and compelling stories to tell relating to the university’s mission of teaching, research and service. It also welcomes input from any student, faculty or staff member, parent or graduate of the university.

Submitting ideas for news

If you have information about research, programs, issues, people and events that you believe are newsworthy, please inform Jane Nicholson or Linda Coutant. The staff will assess its newsworthiness, and determine the appropriate target audience and method of distribution.

Information on upcoming programs and events should be submitted at least two, preferably three, weeks prior to the program or event. High quality photos of a guest speaker/performer are always welcome, and biographical information is requested.

University Photography

The university photographer works in conjunction with writers and designers in the Office of Public Affairs to help illustrate news releases and special projects. Requests for photographic services should be made to Jane Nicholson.

The university photographer also maintains an archive of digital images available to campus departments to support their publication and Web needs. If your department has such photographic requests, contact Jane Nicholson.
